The gym is a modern day shrine for health enthusiasts who are worried about their bodies and their lifestyle. The last few years have experienced a massive increase in the number of gyms housing sophisticated exercise equipment and other related facilities. They are no longer visited by just body builders or professional sportsmen. People both young and old and across all sections of society frequent gyms to stay healthy and keep their bodies toned.

However, the growing popularity of the 'gym culture' has led to the opening of various pseudo centres which fail to live up to the required level, and adversely impact the health of their patrons. Thus, there are some important aspects that you must keep in mind while selecting a gym.

Your motivation levels can be notably impacted if the gym is situated far off from your place of work or home. Thus, selecting a gym that is nearby is very important. Things like arrangement of equipment, air conditioning, and how helpful the employees are, must also be looked at before enrolling in a gym. Moreover, the interiors must not be cluttered with equipments or cause any sort of consternation during exercise. The machines and other facilities in the gym must be checked before joining as they will directly influence how much you can gain from the whole experience.

A gym having additional services like sauna baths is always a better choice. Many gyms even boast of special day care centres that keep kids occupied while their parents sweat it out in the exercise area.

Find out gyms that have personal training services so that you can use exclusive individual guidance. Personal training sessions will look after your individual requirements in terms of a fitness programme and keep you motivated. The more focused, committed and accessible a personal trainer is, better are the chances of the member receiving good advice and training.

A gym whose membership fee exceeds your budget or seems to be much higher given the services it offers should not be selected. Flexible and longer duration packages may be easy on the pocket, but you should be cautious about lock-in periods that may tie you and prevent you from pulling out.

In summary, your gym should be such that visiting it regularly and exercising in it should be a nice and reinvigorating experience for you, and this must be the prime criteria for your selection of the gym.

What To Expect From A Personal Trainer

To assist you in the achievement of your goals in fitness, personal trainers have specific training. You will fill out a medical questionnaire during a pre-exercise fitness evaluation in the beginning session with a personal trainer. Goals, previous sporting experience, previous injuries, and current activity levels are established by this questionnaire that also is used as a tool for the assessment of risk. Prior to beginning a fitness program, a doctor's clearance must be obtained when the initial evaluation is failed by a client.

After this, you will be asked to perform certain movements that will indicate your current fitness level. In designing an exercise plan, your trainer will use the information you provide about goals and desired timeline to best meet your needs. Initially, your body height and weight along with measurements that indicate body composition are performed, so that progress can be assessed.

Your diet will be carefully examined, as you will be requested to keep a food diary in detail by the trainer for the length of the training program. Since fitness professionals are very knowledgeable about dietary requirements, yours will let you know whether you are eating properly and will tell you what you should be eating if you are not.

Prior to hiring your trainer your should verify that they are qualified and insured. The optimal means of achieving this is by getting them to give you their fitness association membership number and expiration date; if it's current, then they probably are also insured and hold the required First Aid Level 2 certificate. Place a call to the fitness association that has registered them for verification of their credentials to be certain.

It is my hope that this article will be useful to you. Meanwhile, best of luck in your quest for a personal trainer.

Improve Your Breathing And Your Life

We very rarely give any thought to breathing, since it's something we all do automatically, but improving how we breathe can improve our performance in everything from our going about our daily routine to completing in professional sports. Your lungs need training just as much as any other part of your body for increased health. Many problems can arise by ignoring natural bodily functions like breathing, so it is to your health and benefit to train your lungs.

If you suffer from breathing or other lung and respiratory problems, you should consult with your physician or a respiratory therapist. They will be able to offer suggestions on how you can improve and increase your lung capacity and offer a program that is best for you and your needs.

When you are breathing correctly, your cells and tissues are oxygenated and receiving the energy they require for their optimal performance needs. This will improve your concentration, reduce stress, increase your metabolism, and strengthen your immune system when you breathe properly, improving your overall health and performance. Most importantly, when you exhale your body rids itself of the majority - around seventy percent - of the toxins your body produces.

If you're not breathing properly, such as in staccato patterns of gasping and panting, there is the potential for harmful side effects to your well being. You might find that you're feeling dizzy, stressed out, or unable to focus on anything but getting your next breath. You might experience a tight feeling in your chest, poor lung capacity, numbness in your extremeties, and muscle pain, among other side effects. When you don't breathe correctly, your body's process of detoxification is drastically reduced, and your body has trouble ridding itself of toxins, which start to build up and cause problems.

Every athlete is aware of the consequences of overexerting which can result in pushing the lungs too far. The results can be an out of breath feeling, fatigue and the need to gasp for air. Our breathing is controlled by 12 sets of respiratory muscles. These muscles react as any other muscles in our bodies do with exertion. Even our regular breathing is controlled by these muscles. These 12 muscles need to be exercised regularly just as all of our other muscles do to keep them healthy and to keep their performance at optimum levels.

Breathing treatments have been vastly improved by modern technology. There are now devices on the market that can be used several times per day to exercise one?s respiratory function. These exercises involve inhaling and exhaling. Keeping the respiratory muscles in good shape is a key to good respiratory function which, in turn, will have a beneficial effect on other body systems.

Breathing can either be a help or a hindrance, whether you're an athlete looking to go the extra mile or a senior who has to climb stairs to get into their house. If you don't know how serious your respiratory problems are, talk to your doctor. In this day and age, there are several technologies available to help you improve your breathing, and therefore your overall performance.

Pump It Up

Pump It Up: Strength Training Tips for Bones, Balance, Weight Control

Not so long ago, lifting weights conjured up images of Arnold Schwarzeneger in his bodybuilding hayday; it certainly wasn't an activity encouraged for someone at risk for a heart attack. Now, however, health experts recommend strength training for everyone to improve overall health and quality of life, even for simple activities like carrying groceries, opening jars and climbing stairs. Most recently on the bandwagon is the American Heart Association (AHA) with new guidelines published July 31st in Circulation. AHA recommends strength training as a part of your regular physical activity, even if you have heart disease (and your doctor gives the okay).

Benefits More Than Your Muscles. If strength training is performed correctly, says the AHA, it enhances the benefits of aerobic exercise plus increases function and independence in healthy older people and in those with cardiovascular disease. By building muscle mass, strength training will help maintain current weight, strengthen bones, increase endurance and improve balance. Studies also show it improves overall quality of life even for people well into their 80s and 90s.

Start Slowly. For the average person just beginning, the AHA recommends only one set of exercises at a minimum of two days a week. People with heart disease should start with less weight but perform more repetitions, enhancing endurance and the cardiovascular system as a whole.

Who Shouldn't Lift Weights. Strength training is not recommended for those with unstable heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, arrhythmias or infections in and around the heart. Even if you're healthy, it's important to always check with your doctor before embarking on a strength-training program. If you've had coronary artery bypass surgery, for example, you'll need to wait eight to 12 weeks to heal.

Bottom Line: Better Health, Better Bones, Better You! Done properly, strength training is a safe and effective way to improve your health and stay active for years. But don't let it take the place of aerobic activities; it should complement whatever walking, jogging, swimming or other "cardio" activities you currently enjoy.

Learn if Children Should be Allowed in MMA

The popularity of Mixed Martial Arts has exploded into mainstream America as well as all over the world. The history of MMA dates back to 648 BC when a form of fighting called Pankration was introduced in the Greek Olympic Games. Pankration was a mix of boxing and wrestling with very limited rules. In modern times we have the Ultimate Fighting Championship on pay per view as well as Spike TV. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, also known as UFC, began their shocking beginning by appearing live in 1993 with the first live pay per view. The UFC was a huge success. However a lack of organization along with being banned in just about every state along with being taken off cable and pay per view the UFC was slowly sinking. In January 2001, a company named Zuffa based out of Las Vegas purchased the UFC. With new rules and weight classes introduced and state sanctioning, the UFC was starting to gain in popularity again. In 2006, the UFC started a new reality show on Spike TV called The Ultimate Fighter that was a huge success. With UFC videos along with the Internet, children have been exposed to this sensational sport and a growing interest developed not only with the kids but parents as well. Should children be allowed in mma is a topic that has been discussed frequently over the last few years.

Kids Martial Arts has been widely popular for the past 25 years in the United States. Millions of Americans have trained in some sort of martial arts at one time or another in their life mostly as kids. Karate and self-defense training are accepted and approved activities for children of all ages. MMA is a combination of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, along with wrestling. Karate and traditional martial arts are performed in routines and they are easy and not physically demanding. Many parents feel comfortable with a child practicing martial arts but with no contact. Mixed Martial Arts is all about the truth in that the techniques that are being used are proven to work and the combatant uses these techniques in live situations on a daily basis in practice. That is pretty much the opposite of traditional martial arts. The problem with traditional martial arts is that they give a false sense of security to children because they have them believe in techniques and concepts that just don't work.

Most sensible parents don't want to witness their child being choked out or kicked in the neck. So should children be allowed in MMA? The answer is yes! Children and MMA can go great together if the child is training at a school that has qualified mma instructors. Most MMA gyms offer Jiu-jitsu classes as well as kickboxing programs. The solution is easy with children and mixed martial arts. Kids should start with an individual discipline like Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or Muay Thai. Once the child is proficient in one area then I believe he or she should be introduced into another form of MMA.

Mixed Martial Arts can offer endless benefits for children, which include:

· Self-discipline
· Physical Fitness
· Teamwork
· A sense of responsibility

Children don't have to compete in MMA while practicing the arts. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and grappling competitions are loaded with kids along with amateur Muay Thai events that allow the children to compete safely. The important thing is that you and your child are comfortable and that the children are learning and training in a safe environment under quality instructors.

Maximizing Gains From Weight Training

Whether you are an experienced weight trainer or a novice to the muscle building scene, we all want to know one thing; "How can I make the most of my workouts?" It doesn't matter if you're involved in strength training, powerlifting, or you simply exercise just to stay in shape, here are some basic weight lifting guidelines you need to follow if you want to maximize your time spent in the gym.

· Correct form while performing exercises
· Ample sleep time
· Drink plenty of water
· Adequate protein intake
· Sufficient caloric intake (includes protein intake)
· Proper nutritional supplements

After weight training for 15 years and competing in bodybuilding for 6 years, I know that if you are lacking in any of these areas, your workouts and your physique will suffer.

There are many different weight training routines circulating about that will help to guide you along the way. However, in this article I will be focusing on which nutritional supplements to take to push you through those workouts.

First and foremost, you need to be supplementing with a multi-vitamin/multi-mineral pack. I say "pack" because generally those one-a-day pills do not give enough of these essential nutrients to combat today's hectic lifestyle. Vitamins and minerals are essential to every single function that goes on within the human body. If you're lacking in one of these nutrients, your body is not functioning at its top level.

The next supplement you're going to want is an excellent protein powder. If you're not supplementing with a protein powder, your muscles may not be getting the adequate amino acids needed to recover and optimize muscle mass. Protein is an absolute must when it comes to building muscle. As far as which type of protein you should choose (whey, casein, etc.), we'll save that for another, more in-depth article.

After these two essential nutrients, there are an abundance of nutritional supplements out there that you can use to add fuel to your weight training fire, but I'll keep it simple for now.

The last supplement I will recommend today is glutamine. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the human body. Given the proper internal environment, your body can manufacture glutamine on its own. However, under intense periods of stress (i.e. weight training) your body cannot make enough glutamine, so supplemental glutamine would be a necessity to optimum performance.

Some of the benefits of glutamine include:

· Improved recovery time
· Less muscle soreness
· Improved immune system function
· Better strength gains

The addition of these three nutritional supplements, plus following the previous basic rules I stated, will help to make sure your body is operating at its peak level. When your body functions at its best, you will undoubtedly feel better and look better as well. When you feel good that will lead to better workouts and that means time well spent in the gym!

Treat Your Body Well - Get A Personal Trainer

The current generation has become dangerously addicted to an inactive and lazy lifestyle. Apart from the consequences of a busy and demanding lifestyle, the problems are further compounded by things like pollution that have resulted in fitness problems all over the world.

Moreover, the corporate world thrives on competition, and in order to succeed, one has to be fit and healthy. Thus people of all ages and walks of life are increasingly feeling the need to include fitness training in their lives.

But fitness plans are not so simple and they must never be started without a specialist to help you out. A qualified personal trainer with extensive qualification and knowledge can offer the correct help in these matters, and thus his services must be employed.

Personal training can encourage and even force a person to scrupulously follow a fitness regime without any breaks. Very often a long day's work saps all your energy to the extent that you don't feel the urge to go to the gym for exercise. A personal trainer can be of immense help in such situations. In addition, he will know exactly what health schedule would suit you best, keeping your fitness requirements and expectations in mind.

Personal trainers often administer fitness tests to evaluate where you stand in the fitness graph and where you need to get better. Therefore, they can always instruct you and tell you about the body parts that you must work on. Personal training is all about acknowledging the individual requirements of the body and customizing the program accordingly. A non-expert will not have this information, and trying these things yourself can easily result in fatigue and even injuries.
Greasy hair never seems to stay fresh and clean, and can look heavy and flat. Within a few hours of shampooing it refuses to stay full and light and it takes on a stringy appearance. Along with looking oily, greasy hair can appear lifeless, lank and dull. Does this sound familiar to you? Do you ask yourself "why is my hair greasy?" Even if they wash it everyday, others can judge that the sufferer does not wash their hair frequently and doesn't have good hygiene. This can cause much social embarrassment.

The grease found in hair is called sebum and is oil that is produced natural by the body. Each of the hairs on your head has a gland called the sebaceous gland immediately under the skin, this gland produces sebum. Oil in greasy hair protects each strand form split ends and dryness, and is in fact a sign of healthy hair. Sebum is made as lubrication for the skin and hair, providing a protective barrier and preventing drying. Sebum is the body's own natural moisturizer.

Greasy hair is actually an excess of sebum in hair which is a result of overactive sebaceous glands over-producing sebum, stimulated by hormones known as androgens. Although they are present in both men and women, androgens are male hormones and are higher in men. Androgens do two things: One, they increase the size of sebaceous glands in the skin. Two, they cause the sebaceous glands to increase the production of oil.

Fluctuating hormones can cause greasy as hormones play a part in sebum production. Greasy hair is most common in women because of either pregnancy or monthly cycle, older women going through the menopause, and teenagers experiencing puberty. Stress can be a contributory factor in greasy hair as it is known to affect hormones levels. People with fine hair on their head may experience excessive greasy hair as they have more hair follicles and more sebaceous glands producing more sebum.

There are several external causes of greasy hair. Washing your hair too frequently can cause more sebum to be produced as frequent washing can strip the hair of oils, to combat this sebaceous glands excrete sebum. Sebaceous glands can be stimulated through vigorous scrubbing of the hair and scalp while washing. Touching your hair can also stimulate sebaceous glands, along with vigorous hair brushing which carries oil throughout the hair. The over-use of styling products can cause hair to look greasy as the products can build-up at the roots. Everyday environmental pollutants can also cause hair to look greasy.

There are also several internal causes to greasy hair as well. Along with changing hormone levels, a major cause of greasy hair is the food you put inside of you, i.e. you diet. Western diets are usually much greasier, containing more fat. They are usually processed, containing many additives, and typically are higher in fat and sugar. The high fat content of the diet increases oil in the skin which can lead to greasy hair. The meat in a Western diet often contains some hormones, and these hormones can add to the levels of unbalanced hormones. Greasy hair can also be a sign of a diet that is low in vitamin B.

The key of how to avoid, stop, treat and cure greasy hair is approach it from the outside and inside. Starting with the outside: avoid brushing your hair too often, and avoid brushing your hair vigorously. As you wash your hair, massage your hair and scalp lightly instead of scrubbing them vigorously. The beast shampoo for greasy hair is a mild-ph shampoo that is extra cleansing or clarifying. Look for a shampoo that is specially formulated for greasy hair. To protect against dryness moisturizing shampoos can leave oil in your hair, these should be avoided.

For the best results, the longer you leave the shampoo in, the better. If necessary, rinse your hair and shampoo again. The question of how often to wash your hair is as unique as the individual. The ideal frequency is 1-2 times per week, but to find your own balance start with washing everyday then reduce that to find a good balance of washing and oil production. If you use a hairdryer when styling your hair don't let it get too hot as heat will stimulate more oil production. When it comes to conditioning your hair, again use a conditioner designed for greasy hair. Apply conditioner to the mid and ends of your hair, but not the roots.

For the inside: do everything you can to reduce any stress that you may have in your life. For your diet, reduce the amount of fat and dairy products, and avoid fried, fatty and greasy foods as much as possible. Consider vitamin B supplements in your diet. Avoid sugar and sugary foods like cakes, biscuits and soft drinks. Reduce the foods containing white flour like bread, pasta and pastries. Be sure to eat lots of nuts, seeds and whole grains, and leafy & green vegetables, salads and fresh fish.

Anthropometric Characteristics of a Cyclist

The physiology of a road cyclist is measured in various levels- on leveled terrain, uphill and downhill roads. A cyclist's anthropometric characteristics contribute to his or her performance. BM determines uphill cycling performance while FA affects the individual performance on a terrain. (Swain et al. 1987). The morphological characteristics differ from person to person. Here morphotype specialists have a role to play during each phase of a race. They can be flat terrain riders who perform on flat roads; uphill riders who ride on hills; all terrain riders who are comfortable on all types of terrain; time trial specialists meant for individually raced events and sprinters who ride in the final part of the race.

The information regarding the anthropometric characteristics of flat terrain riders, hill climbers, time trial specialists and all terrain riders is given in Padilla et al(1999). But no data on sprinters is available. There is sizeable difference in absolute Wmax, WLT, WOBLA and VO2max values among these riders. Flat terrain riders and time trial specialists showed the highest values. These show the superior performance ability of the riders. Scaling of the values relative to BM and BM 0_79 changed the differences among groups. Uphill riders and time trial specialists showed the highest value when Wmax, WLT and WOBLA were reported relative to BM and BM079. These groups share a similar aptitude in uphill cycling.

Time trial specialists perform as good as flat terrain riders and uphill specialists. A professional cyclist is not determined by optimal morphotype but by his or her individual morph type in competitions and events. The anthropometric characteristics differ from person to person.

The results of three-week stage races (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a Espaha) are determined by performances in the time trial. The overall performance of these competitions shows an optimum compromise between the cyclist's anthropometric characteristics and his or her physiological attributes. You can imagine three competitors. It was noted that in these competitions a time trial specialist emerged the winner. Therefore they not only have advantage on performance but also on the outcome of the race. Other variables like thermoregulatory, recovery, and psychological capacities; health condition and race strategy also affects the performance.

It has been proved based on data and experience that cyclists are seldom pure hill climbers or pure time trial specialists. Each type of a road cyclist is judged by external characteristics like BM, body dimensions, and internal characteristics like aerobic and anaerobic capacities. The performance is mostly determined by internal characteristics.

Cyclists who have different external characteristics perform similarly in competitions. There are times, situations and training states where a cyclist can perform as an optimum climber, an optimum time trial specialist or both rather than optimum morphotype for climbing or time trial.

Read full article about road cycling training and training for bike rides available here at this web.

Weight training is important if you are interested in loosing weight or just maintaining your current weight. It is also important to keep your bones strong.

Most individuals focus completely on cardio workouts to lose weight. However it is possible to burn more calories by doing weight training. This is possible because your body keeps burning calories 24 hours after the workout.

With cardiovascular workout you only burn calories during your workout and not after. You can burn up to 100 more calories by doing weight training than cardio exercises.

Additionally by adding weight training to your exercise you will not lose any muscle. Anything you do lose will be 100% fat. Those individuals that only do cardiovascular then you will lose fat but you will also lose muscle. Weight training will let you keep the muscle you have.
